The worker who was trapped after the partial collapse of the Torre dei Conti, in the center of Rome, was rescued alive after 11 hours of intense search operations. The collapse of the medieval tower, built in the 13th century, occurred on Monday morning, when restoration work was underway.
According to Italian firefighters, the man, a 66-year-old Romanian citizen, was removed from the rubble at around 11pm local time (10pm in Lisbon) and handed over to the emergency services, who immediately transported him to the hospital.
More than 140 firefighters participated in the rescue operations, which took place under difficult conditions due to the risk of further collapses. Medical sources revealed to the ANSA agency that the worker is in an “extremely serious” condition, having suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest upon entering the ambulance.
The incident alerted the Italian authorities, who have already opened an investigation to determine the causes of the collapse.
