The 34-year-old Democrat won the New York elections and will be the next mayor of the largest city in the United States. The election, which took place this Tuesday (4/11), brought more than 2 million people to the polls and .
With 80% of the votes counted, Mamdani has 50.6% of the votes and will be the 111th mayor of NY. The Democrat becomes the youngest person to be elected to the position and is the first Muslim to win the election for the largest city in the USA.
which lost the Democratic primary and ran as an independent, came in second, with 41.2%. Cuomo received support from President Donald Trump, for New York if the socialist won the election.
Third place went to the Republican candidate, radio host Curtis Sliwa, with 7.4% of the vote.
Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, to an Indian mother and a Ugandan father. He moved to New York at age seven and grew up in Queens, becoming fluent in six languages.

Before entering politics, he had experience as a hip-hop artist and housing counselor, but his career gained prominence in 2021, when he was elected state representative for the Democratic Party.
Unlike other traditional Democrats, Mamdani is part of the left-wing wing of the party, and is affiliated with the Democratic Socialists of America.
Charismatic and close to digital influencers, Mamdani quickly gained attention, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primaries with 56% of the vote.
Since then, his candidacy has gained repercussion inside and outside the United States, being compared, in terms of campaign style, to the rise of Donald Trump in 2016 — albeit with left-wing proposals.

Mamdani’s main proposals
- Rent freezing;

Divided city
New York is a city marked by diversity and social inequality. Mamdani has won support among voters concerned about the cost of living, especially rent and transportation, but faces resistance from part of the business community and more traditional sectors of the Democratic Party.
The candidate also had to deal with sensitive topics, such as public security and international relations. After criticizing the police in 2020, Mamdani apologized and today proposes maintaining the NYPD staff, creating community safety departments and prioritizing mental health in non-violent calls.
In addition to the future of city hall, the New York election will be a national political thermometer. The result could indicate how Americans respond to Trump’s second term, the government shutdown and the growing polarization between Democrats and Republicans.
