Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister Gilmar Mendes stated this Wednesday (5), during the Buenos Aires Forum, that Brazil has become an international example of democratic resistance when facing attacks on Justice and institutions — including the episode involving businessman Elon Musk, owner of platform X (formerly Twitter).
“It was a sign that we had transcended our borders on this issue”, said Gilmar, recalling that the Federal Supreme Court was recognized by foreign courts for its work in defense of the Rule of Law. According to him, the Brazilian institutional reaction to offensives against democracy “has become an international case”.
The minister stated that the episode shows how contemporary challenges, especially on social media, go beyond national borders and directly impact politics. “The issue of social networks is an issue that has repercussions on politics”, he observed.

Gilmar argued that the current crisis in democracies should be seen as an opportunity for institutional maturity. “The history of democracy is also the history of its crisis. It continually reinvents itself”, he stated, highlighting that rebuilding public trust is essential to contain extremism.
For the minister, politics needs to reconnect with the concrete demands of the population. “The exit cannot happen without a force that affirms that each crisis is treated as a method. It is necessary to reconnect politics with people’s real needs and ensure that the truth prevails over fake news”, he said.
Gilmar concluded that the deepening of democracy depends on confronting radicalism and consolidating a new pact between institutions and society. “The immense challenge for strengthening democracy is to confront extremism and rebuild the space of trust and power”, he concluded.
