The deployment of military forces from the United States to the United States and the tension between North Americans and the United States will be the subject of the Celac-European Union summit, which will be held in Santa Marta, this weekend. The president of Brazil decided at the last minute to go to the meeting. He must travel on Saturday night (8), or on Sunday (9), in the morning, and return on the same day. The Secretary for and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gisela Padovan, lamented the absence of heads of state at the CELAC-European Union summit, but said that this does not necessarily represent a political gesture by the absent countries.
“I wouldn’t automatically read that because there are fewer people (there is a political gesture). We recognize that there is polarization, difficulties between countries, there are many circumstances, but it is not the only explanation. (The heads of state of) attend the inauguration of the president of , for example”, said Padovan, in a press interview at Itamaraty this Thursday, 6, about the Celac-EU Summit. “I regret that the heads of state are close and will not go, but there are (other) circumstances”, he added.
Padovan explained that the meeting that will be held on November 9th and 10th in Santa Marta was not called because of the tension involving Venezuela, but that “it is obvious” that the matter will be addressed. “The meeting was not called for this reason, but it is natural that an issue that concerns countries in the region is addressed. I don’t know if (the issue involving Venezuela) will be included in the declaration or not, the initial focus is on regional cooperation, and not the world’s geopolitical issue”, he stated.
Regarding the possibility of Brazil positioning itself as a possible interlocutor between the United States and Venezuela, as already occurred in the PT member’s first term, the ambassador reinforced that this will only happen if there is a request from both countries. “Brazil always positions itself as a possible interlocutor. We are available, because we are relevant neighbors, we have deep interests in Venezuela and we have to talk to everyone. But we cannot do it if we are not asked,” he stated.
