Serra da Estrela is already wearing white: snow forces the closure of roads

Serra da Estrela received the first snow of the season this evening, forcing the temporary closure of National Road 339 between Piornos and Lagoa Comprida, including access to the Tower. According to Civil Protection, the road was closed at 9:30 pm due to intense snowfall and strong wind, reopening to traffic at 7 am this Thursday.

The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere had already warned of showers that could turn into snow above 1600 meters, as a result of the sharp drop in temperatures. The mainland is currently under the influence of a cold front of moderate to strong activity, bringing rain, thunderstorms and gusts of wind.
