BUENOS AIRES – The national president of the Republicans, Marcos Pereira, stated this Thursday (6), at the Buenos Aires Forum, that the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, is currently a pre-candidate for re-election in 2026, but could review his decision if a broad movement of support for a presidential candidacy emerged.

“Today he is a candidate for re-election, that’s what we’ve been talking about and what we’re working on. But, in politics, anything is possible,” he said.

According to Pereira, the eventual change would depend on a broad national front, which would bring together parties from the center and right, the productive sector and the business community, in addition to the support of former president Jair Bolsonaro.

“A request has to come from a broad front, from several parties, parties of the center, the right, the productive sector, the business community as a whole. There has to be an outcry from society as a whole, not just from one person. It’s obvious that Bolsonaro’s support is important. And if there is, who knows, right?”, he stated.

Pereira considered that running for President would be a riskier step for the governor.

“Elections are never easy, but re-election is relatively easier than resigning to run in a presidential election, which is much further away”, he assessed.
