Teachers: Government extends extraordinary competition and increases vacancies in some subjects

The contest, launched last week, ended on the 14th but was extended until 23:59 on November 21st. As for vacancies, the Government will not change the total number of places, but rather the number of vacancies for each recruitment grouptaking away from those “where we probably don’t even have enough candidates” to reinforce other disciplines.

The Ministry of decided to extend the extraordinary competition for schools with more difficulties in hiring teachers and will review the vacancy ordinance, reinforcing some subjects without changing the total number of places available.

“We are going to extend the deadline and we are going to make a small adjustment in vacancies. The overall number of vacancies is the same, but we will make a small adjustment”, Minister Fernando Alexandre said this Thursday, speaking to journalists at the end of a meeting with unions on the negotiating protocol for the review of the Teaching Career Statute.

The competition, launched last week with 1,800 places, ended on the 14th, but was extended until 23:59 on November 21st.

As for vacancies, the Government will not change the total number of places available, but rather the number of vacancies for each recruitment grouptaking away from those “where we probably don’t even have enough candidates” to reinforce other disciplines.

This is the case of Physics and Chemistry, initially with no vacancies available and for which the Ministry of Education, Science and Innovation guaranteed, last week, that it would have teachers available for the neediest schools.

“In the last recruitment reserve, only three schedules were requested” for Physics and Chemistry teachers for those schools, “currently with a total of 12 teachers to be placed in the recruitment pool”, the guardianship explained at the time.

In addition to Physics and Chemistry, the minister added that they will also be vacancies for the recruitment group for the 1st cycle of Basic Education have been reinforced.
