With Fachin at the COP, Moraes presides over the STF session for the first time this 5th

Minister Alexandre de Moraes, from the STF (Supreme Federal Court), will preside over a plenary session of the Court for the first time this Thursday (6).

The minister has been the current vice-president of the Supreme Court since the end of September, when he took office alongside , who is in the presidency.

Fachin, who normally leads the sessions, will be in Belém this Thursday for the event that precedes COP30, to represent the Judiciary. He will be alongside President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the President of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB).

At the end of the plenary session on Wednesday (5), Fachin announced that Moraes would replace him. Minister Dias Toffoli joked that his colleague would be “eager” to sit in the chair of the STF presidency.

Fachin and Moraes make up the Court’s presidential ticket.

This Thursday, Moraes’ role will be to lead the session’s work. He is the one who opens and closes the meeting, organizes the order of the cases to be judged, gives the floor to ministers, lawyers and representatives of the parties, controls the speaking time and guarantees discipline during debates.

The president of the session also votes last and, at the end, proclaims the official result of the trial.

On this Thursday’s agenda are the discussion about whether there is an omission by the National Congress in regulating the tax on large fortunes; the need or not for public lawyers to be registered with the OAB to perform their functions; and the validity of municipal laws in Curitiba that reorganized teachers’ career plans, establishing new progression criteria in the municipal network.
