on Thursday night (6/11), in Belém. During a speech at the first thematic round table of COP30, Lula said that it will be time for countries to transform promises into concrete actions.

“This COP, which is the COP of truth, proposes a pact for the life of the forests, the oceans and humanity itself. It is time to transform ambition into action and to rediscover the balance between growth and sustainability”, said the president.

Lula participated in the round table “Climate and Nature: Forests and Oceans” and presented federal government actions related to the topic. The president highlighted that Brazil reduced deforestation in the Amazon by more than 50%, reaching the lowest rate in the last 11 years. “This is one of my government’s main commitments,” stated Lula.

The president stated that Brazil will ratify the High Seas Treaty by the end of 2025, which establishes rules for the sustainable use of resources in areas outside national jurisdictions.

At the round table, Lula stated that only a “reinvigorated multilateralism” can solve collective problems caused by climate change. “No country can face the climate crisis alone. The fires that consume our forests do not respect borders. Neither does the plastic that pollutes our oceans and eliminates marine life”

One of the highlights of the president’s speech at the event, officially launched this Thursday at the COP30 Leaders’ Summit.

The TFFF creates a new climate finance model: countries that preserve tropical forests will be financially rewarded through a global investment fund. Meanwhile, investors recover the resources invested, with remuneration compatible with average market rates.

“It is a financial mechanism that will remunerate investors while generating income for countries that preserve standing forests. Only a robust and equitable financial architecture can guarantee that the conservation of our largest ecosystems has resources,” said Lula.

The Leaders’ Summit precedes the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30), which will be held from November 10th to 21st in Belém.
