American President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Iran is requesting the lifting of sanctions imposed on it by the United States. According to his words, he is open to discussing it, TASR informs, according to a report by the AFP agency.

  • Donald Trump announced Iran’s request to lift US sanctions.
  • Trump is willing to discuss the possibility of easing sanctions.
  • Iran is accused of developing nuclear weapons, which Tehran denies.
  • The UN has renewed sanctions on Iran for violating its obligations under the nuclear agreement.
  • Oman has called for the resumption of US-Iranian nuclear talks.

“Iran is asking if the sanctions could be lifted. Iran has very tough sanctions from the US and that makes it very difficult for them to do what they want to do.” Trump told reporters at the White House. “I’m open to hearing it and we’ll see what happens, but I would be open to it,” he added.

Western countries, including the United States, have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons. However, Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. Israel attacked Iran in June of this year, and the two hostile nations waged a 12-day war. The United States also joined the war by attacking Iran’s nuclear facility.

The US and Iran have been holding nuclear talks since April, which however the aforementioned war stopped. Trump Says Iran Was Once ‘Middle East Bully’but no longer has the “possibility of possessing nuclear weapons”. The US president has repeatedly said that the attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities destroyed Tehran’s nuclear program. AFP reports that the total extent of the damage is unknown.

The UN renewed sanctions on Iran in September after the E3 countries (Britain, France and Germany) in late August activated the so-called a “snapback” mechanism, as they say Iran has violated several of its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal.

Oman, which hosted this year’s US-Iran nuclear talks, called on both sides to resume them. These talks were aimed at reaching a new agreement that would limit Iran’s nuclear activities in exchange for the easing of sanctions, AFP clarifies.
