At least five people were killed by typhoon Kalmaegi, which hit the territory of Vietnam on Friday and caused extensive damage thereinforms TASR according to an AFP report.
- Typhoon Kalmaegi hit Vietnam, where it caused considerable damage.
- The number of victims of the typhoon reached at least 188 people.
- The typhoon destroyed at least 57 houses and damaged nearly 3,000 dwellings.
- As a result of the typhoon, 1.6 million customers were left without electricity.
- Scientists say that climate change is increasing the intensity of typhoons.
The number of victims of the devastating typhoon, which previously swept through the Philippines, rose to at least 188. It caused devastating floods in the Philippines and also left behind extensive damage. The typhoon hit Vietnam as the country recovers from major flooding caused by record-breaking rains.
Vietnamese authorities were still assessing the damage as of Friday morning, but the Ministry of the Environment has since confirmed five victims and at least 57 destroyed houses. Nearly 3,000 other homes had their roofs blown off or were otherwise damaged, the department added. Eleven boats and ships also sank as a result of the typhoon.
According to the state power plants, 1.6 million customers were left without electricity supplies, but services were restored to about a third of them as of Friday morning. Scientists warn that storms are getting stronger as a result of human-caused climate change. Warmer oceans allow typhoons to strengthen quickly, and a warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, leading to more intense rainfall.
