Former NBA player Tony Allen, champion for the Boston Celtics and idol of the Memphis Grizzlies, was arrested last Wednesday in the state of Arkansas, in the United States, for possession of drugs.
According to Poinsett County authorities, Allen, 43, was a passenger in a car driven by William Hatton, 33. During an inspection, police found a package of marijuana and a box of cigarettes with cocaine. The former player stated that he was unaware of the presence of the substances and that the driver had been appointed by the organization of an event in which he would participate.
Tony Allen, recognized as one of the best defenders of his generation, played for the Boston Celtics, Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans, ending his career in 2018. Despite his sporting achievements, the former athlete has a history of problems with the law: in 2023 he was sentenced to three years of probation for fraud against NBA health insurance and, in 2021, he faced charges of domestic violence and vandalism, which were later dropped.
Still, his legacy in Memphis remains intact. This year, the Grizzlies removed the number 9 from their jerseys, paying homage to the player who marked an era at the club.
