The film, which portrays the story of a teacher who faces repression from the military dictatorship in Recife, won him the Best Actor Award at Cannes and is Brazil’s candidate in the Best International Film category at the Oscars.

Brazilian actor Wagner Moura is in Portugal to participate in a film festival, where he came to present The Secret Agenta film that won him the Best Actor Award at Cannes.

The story follows a professor who leaves São Paulo to return to his hometown, Recife, in search of peace. However, he quickly discovers that peace is obstructed by the repression of the military dictatorship. It was for this project that Wagner Moura returned to Brazil.

At the Cannes festival, while Moura was working in London, the film was represented by Kleber Mendonça Filho, who received the award for Best Director. The Secret Agent it also won the FIPRESCI award, awarded by international critics.

This film is Brazil’s candidate in the Best International Film category at the Oscars, and Wagner Moura’s performance could earn him a nomination for Best Actor.

Wagner Moura made his debut as a director with Marighellaa film about one of the greatest opponents of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Initially scheduled to premiere in 2019, the feature film only reached cinemas two years later, due to obstacles from the Brazilian National Cinema Agency, during the government of Jair Bolsonaro.

How it all started…

It was as Captain Nascimento, in Elite Troopthat Wagner Moura began to gain international recognition. The film won the Golden Bear in Berlin in 2008.

His Hollywood debut took place with Elysiuma science fiction film, alongside Matt Damon and Jodie Foster.

However, it was like Pablo Escobar in the series Narcos that he achieved worldwide recognition, being nominated in 2016 for the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama Series.

Now, Wagner Moura returns to the United States to make his second feature film, which, according to him, will be an “anti-capitalist Christmas film”.
