Russia sharply criticizes the US for attacks on Venezuelan vessels. Moscow called the actions illegal and accused the United States of violating international law.
Moscow on Tuesday condemned the United States’ attacks on vessels belonging to its long-time ally – Venezuela. Russia called the US attacks unacceptable. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
Tensions between Washington and Caracas have risen dramatically recently, when US President Donald Trump ordered the military to attack Venezuelan vessels he accused of smuggling drugs. Dozens of people died in the attacks.
Criticism from Russia
“This is usually how lawless countries behave, as well as those that think they are above the law,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
Lavrov added that the United States is “destroying (these ships) without trial or investigation… And also without presenting any facts to anyone.”
Accusations against Maduro
The Trump administration also claims that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro is the head of a drug cartel. Maduro, who has the political and economic support of the Kremlin, has rejected the accusations and insists that Venezuela is being used against his will as a route to smuggle cocaine from Colombia, AFP reports.
Relations between the United States and Russia have also deteriorated in recent weeks. In addition to the war in Ukraine, attention has also shifted to the issue of nuclear tests, which Trump recently declared that the US will resume, because Russia and China are allegedly doing so. Russia says it does not conduct nuclear tests, but if any of the major powers violates the current moratorium, it too will begin testing nuclear weapons.
