The background of the elections in Iraq

Sudani was first elected in 2022 with the support of pro-Iranian parties and ran for a second term in Tuesday’s election. The vote took place more than two decades after the US invasion that led to the overthrow of President Saddam Hussein’s regime. This period was followed by years of fighting against the Islamic State (IS) jihadist organization.
