When in October 2023 a robotaxi from the provider Cruise failed to recognize a pedestrian who had been hit by another car, rolled over her and dragged her for six meters, it was the beginning of the end for the service. Parent company General Motors stopped operations after a temporary license revocation and announced a review and technical improvements. It returned to the streets of San Francisco the following May, but its tarnished reputation and high costs of operation led GM to pull the plug and exit the market a few months later. The technological basis of Cruise is now used to develop driving assistance systems for our own cars.
