Properties of the former president of Argentina and family members are subject to seizure; measure is part of the Vialidad case

The Vialidad case involves irregularities in public works carried out in the province of Santa Cruz, in Patagonia, during the Kirchner governments, revealing a corruption scheme between the federal administration and businessmen, mainly Lázaro Báez.

According to the Argentine newspaper Kirchner and family will lose 20 properties: one in Cristina’s name, and another 19 inherited by her children Máximo and Florencia. Businessman Lázaro Báez will lose more than 80, including properties belonging to companies linked to the scheme.
The court’s decision comes after the deadline stipulated by the court for the payment of the amount by the convicts, on August 13th. Cristina in September explained how the calculation was carried out and asked for the confiscation to be annulled.
According to the Argentine newspaper Kirchner’s defense claims that the prosecution failed to establish a relationship between the identified assets and the crime. For the judges who decided on confiscation, the seizure does not require a “scientific traceability”.
The properties highlighted for seizure by the case’s prosecutors, Diego Luciani and Sergio Mola, were selected based on when they were acquired by the defendants: from 2003 to 2015, the period covered by the case.
