Shortwave station UVB-76 operated by the Russian military, known as “Doomsday Radio” broadcast another disturbing report on Monday (November 17). At 2:04 p.m. Moscow time, the word “Bolonsky” was heard again on the airwaves, which was last recorded on February 20, 2022. The Telegram channel UVB-76 logs informed about it, writes the Russian online daily.
The station sent its fourth message during the day. The first appeared at 11:11 am. and contained the hitherto unrecorded word “lottery”. At 12:36 p.m. another new word “ocinkovščik” followed. Seven minutes later the station repeated the term “forest ice”, which also appeared on the air in February 2022. In recent months, UVB-76 has regularly repeated the messages it broadcast before the invasion of Ukraine.
For example, on August 25, the words “nardosaž” and “puloled” appeared on air, first broadcast in January 2022. On October 6, the word “nut grinder” was heard again, originally broadcast on February 11, 2022.
Station UVB-76 has been operating since 1976 and most of the time broadcasts the monotonous hum that gave it its nickname. However, the Cold War-era station recently went silent for a short time after a drone attack damaged a nearby electrical substation, the website writes. This was reported by Russian state media and open source analyses.
The outage is notable mainly because it practically never changes its signal. It has been broadcasting non-stop, characteristic since launch humming at a frequency of 4625 kHz, approximately 25 pulses per minute. Occasionally, short voice messages with coded phrases dictated in the Russian phonetic alphabet appear in the signal.
More than half a century of broadcasts without any official explanation causes a wave of speculation and fascination. One of the most famous theories claims that it is part of the “Dead Hand” system. According to her, stopping the signal after a nuclear attack on Russia would automatically trigger a retaliatory strike. Occasional coded word messages have sparked speculation on social media about their possible connection to geopolitical events.
