The Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) congratulated, in a note, the appointment of the current Attorney General of the Union (AGU), Jorge Messias, to the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
“The appointment of Jorge Messias to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) has special meaning for the legal profession. He is a career lawyer, with a career built in public service and who, now, is called to join the highest court in the country”, says the note, signed by Beto Simonetti, president of the Federal Council of the OAB.
“The presence of names from the legal profession in the STF strengthens the dialogue between the institutions of the Justice System and recognizes the role of the profession in republican life”, says another excerpt from the document, which also wishes Messias “luck” on the Senate Saturday
Indication of Messiah
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) appointed, this Thursday (21), the attorney general of the Union, Jorge Messias, to the vacancy left by Luís Roberto Barroso in the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Barroso retired last month. The nomination was sealed in a meeting with the AGU at Palácio da Alvorada.
After formal nomination by the President of the Republic, the chosen one must undergo a hearing at the Constitution and Justice Commission (CCJ) of the Senate and, subsequently, be approved by the plenary. In the CCJ, a simple majority is enough; in the plenary, approval requires an absolute majority, at least 41 votes.
The government is concerned about the possibility that Messias’ nomination will face treatment similar to that given to André Mendonça. Appointed by former president in 2021, Mendonça faced a four-month wait until he was examined and approved for the STF, in a context in which the Senate leadership did not support his nomination. Even so, Lula decided to play the name Messias, who is one of the president’s trusted men,
The senators’ preferred candidate — and supported by the president (União-AP) — was (PSD-MG). Congressmen close to Alcolumbre that a different nomination could have “a long delay or even be rejected”.
