This Sunday, athlete Margarida Silva won gold in the 800 meters at the Tokyo2025 Deaflympic Games, which run until November 26, Portugal’s fifth medal in the competition.
Margarida Silva, who had already won silver in the 1,500 meters, ran the 800 meters in 2:10.38 minutes, a new record for the Deaflympic Games, surpassing the previous best mark of 2:10.50.
The Portuguese athlete beat the Russian Iuliia Abubiakirova, competing under a neutral flag, who finished second, with 2:10.64 minutes, while the Chinese Na Gao was third, with 2:11.69.
This is the fifth Portuguese medal in this edition of the Deaflympic Games, with Margarida Silva’s two joining judoka Joana Santos’ gold in -57kg, while cyclist André Soares won silver in the individual time trial and bronze in the points race.
Margarida Silva also became the first Portuguese woman to win a gold medal in athletics at the Deaflympic Games.
