The president of the Liberal Party, Valdemar Costa Netoin Congress to debate the party’s political strategy after the former president’s preventive arrest Jair Bolsonaro (PL)determined not Saturday (22).
Among the main issues to be discussed is the bill that provides amnesty to those involved in the acts of January 8, 2023. The information was confirmed by the leader of the PL in the Chamber, deputy Sóstenes Cavalcante (RJ), after lunch this Sunday (23) in the apartment of the opposition leader, deputy Luciano Zucco (RS). Also present were Senator Flavio Bolsonaro (RJ) and the federal deputy Hélio Lopes (RJ).
“We are here in solidarity and devising strategies so that we can once and for all face the amnesty project in the Chamber to do justice to President Bolsonaro and everyone on January 8th,” said Sóstenes.
The bench meeting will be held from 2pm at the party headquarters, in the Setor Hoteleiro Sul, central region of Brasília.
The rapporteur of the amnesty proposal, who prefers to call it the “dosimetry” project, , deputy Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB). He defends a version of the project that only deals with the calculation of penalties, without broad amnesty, as the Bolsonarists want.
According to people close to the rapporteur, during the conversation, Hugo only agreed to discuss the matter again. There was no progress, however, on the merits of the project and no agreement on the date for voting on the text. The decision to guide the proposal, however, rests with President Hugo.
The opposition’s argument is that the arrest creates a “new fact” and makes the vote on the Amnesty PL “urgent”. The project has already had the urgency regime approved, which allows it to be discussed directly in the plenary.
“We are going to do our part to seek this amnesty in the National Congress, to unite the right even more. Because everyone is increasingly clear that this will not stop with Bolsonaro”, said Bolsonaro’s son 01 Saturday night, during a prayer vigil held in favor of the former president.
In addition to the reaction in Congress, the PL also has the challenge of adjusting the route for discussions about the next elections. As CNN showed, Bolsonaro’s preventive arrest should impact the party’s efforts to form regional platforms in the 2026 elections.
The party’s intentions for the election would be one of the topics debated by Bolsonaro with allies. On Thursday (21), the former president had requested authorization to receive 16 visits in the coming days.
The list included, for example, the leader of the party in the Senate, senator Carlos Portinho (RJ) and the former candidate for president of the Republic Padre Kelmon, as well as other allied parliamentarians.
