A new industrial chapter is taking shape in the interior of Spain, with regional impact and European reach. The announcement involves Di Caprio, Spain and a semiconductor factory, in a project that promises to change the technological map of Extremadura without revealing, from the outset, all the contours.
The city of Trujillo will host a high-performance semiconductor production unit promoted by Diamond Foundry, participated by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, in partnership with the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation. The plan, approved by the Council of Ministers, foresees a total investment of 2,350 million euros by 2029 and the creation of more than 2,100 direct and indirect jobs, reveals the Spanish newspaper.
Profile of stations and effect on the value chain
According to the company, the factory will generate 500 highly qualified direct jobs, reinforced by around 1,600 indirect jobs linked to auxiliary services and the supply chain. The objective is to consolidate an ecosystem that combines production, maintenance, logistics and advanced services around microelectronics.
The unit will use synthetic monocrystalline diamond as a substrate to manufacture high-performance chips. This material offers thermal and electrical properties superior to those of silicon and other semiconductors, responding to high temperature, voltage and frequency applications, says the same source.
Strategic applications and European positioning
The industrial complex will integrate silicon cutting, cutting, polishing and inspection processes, preparing production for sectors such as defense, automobiles and advanced computing. Once completed, it will be the first factory in the world dedicated exclusively to monocrystalline diamond semiconductors, positioning Spain as a reference supplier.
The estimated impact on the national gross domestic product is 2,150 million euros in the first decade of operation. The State will contribute 752 million euros, around 32 percent of the total investment, through a joint company between the public entity and the Spanish subsidiary of Diamond Foundry.
Extremadura as a technological hub
The investment in Trujillo adds to the installation of a data computing and artificial intelligence center in Badajoz, already underway. Together, the projects seek to anchor technological skills and digital infrastructures in the region, attracting talent and specialized suppliers.
Diamond-based technology targets niches where thermal dissipation and electrical robustness are critical, such as power converters, radio frequency and edge computing. By diversifying substrates beyond silicon, the project contributes to the resilience of the European semiconductor chain.
The initiative is part of a public-private collaboration model designed to accelerate the industrialization of strategic technologies. Regulatory predictability and access to financing are highlighted as essential factors to ensure calendar, supplier integration and workforce qualification.
With this decision, Spain reinforces its capacity to capture industrial projects with high added value and to integrate new technologies into production. The association between Di Caprio, Spain and a semiconductor factory also seeks to convey confidence to international investors about the technical feasibility and local anchoring of the project.
