A train ran over a group of railway workers on Thursday (27), killing 11 people and injuring two, authorities in the southwestern city of Kunming said.
This was the deadliest rail accident in more than a decade.
The train, which was testing earthquake detection equipment, struck workers on a curved section of the railway line at Luoyang station, authorities said.
The station in Yunnan province has resumed normal operations and the cause of the accident is being investigated, they added in a statement.
China’s railway network is the largest in the world, stretching more than 160,000 km and recording billions of trips annually.
Although praised for its efficiency, the network has been the target of criticism following several high-profile cases, such as the 2011 accident in the eastern province of Zhejiang, which killed 40 people and injured 200.
At least nine people died in 2021 when a train in the northwestern province of Gansu ran over workers on a section of the Lanzhou-Xinjiang railway.
