Berlin wants and doesn't want the Olympic Games

Official referendum gave victory to “yes”. But in the meantime there has been a survey saying otherwise; and there is a movement against it.

October 26, 2025, and already thinking about a long-term future: referendum in Berlin about the possibility of the German city hosting the Olympic Games – in 2036, 2040 or 2044.

The inhabitants of the capital of Germany said yes, they voted a favor. 60% of residents who went to vote approved the idea.

Mayor Dieter Reiter spoke of a “good day for Munich”, while Jörg Ammon, leader of the Bavarian Sports Federation, looked at this 60% as a “dream result”.

Berlin authorities say that now that the process has begun, things will move forward.

But progress is already being made obstacles, in the first few weeks.

The NOlympia movement, which is against this initiative, announced last week that it will, starting in January, try to organize a referendum to reverse the issue – a “no” in an official referendum, after the official announcement by the German Olympic Committee, would annul the candidacy.

But Berlin is not alone: Munich, Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia are also entering the race for now.

Furthermore, this week the newspaper published a poll which shows that 67% of Berlin’s inhabitants are contra this candidacy.

Only 27% support the Senate’s efforts to bring the Olympic Games to the German capital. 6% are undecided.

Remember that, in the referendum a month ago, 60% took the opposite stance: they want the Olympic Games in Berlin.

The German capital last hosted the event in 1972.
