The PSP commissioner also highlighted that the car was overcrowded: “there were six passengers, two [pessoas] in the front and four in the back seat”, so it can be concluded that at least one young man did not have a seat belt.
According to Dinarte Diniz, it was a PSP agent working at the United States embassy in Lisbon who witnessed the accident and alerted the authorities.
“It all happened very quickly. The officer witnessed the accident, but when he arrived at the scene the vehicle was already on fire and he immediately activated the emergency resources. After a few minutes the emergency resources were at the scene”, he said, realizing that the car hit the sidewalk and was thrown into the parking lot.
At the scene of the accident, in the Sete Rios area, there were the PSP, INEM, doctors from the National Institute of Legal Medicine (INML) and firefighters. The commissioner also said that there is some information that the young people may all be friends and indicated that some family members are in the INML.
