Already in the blog post “Separation with animals: Who keeps dogs, cats & co?” was about who gets a pet after a breakup. The current ruling of the Supreme Court of October 23, 2025 followed this line, but concerned another area that has hardly been examined so far: Can a dog be used between former partners by way of civil division – and can one of the two keep the dog alone for the time being until the decision is made?
