For the second time in just over a month, the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the president of the Palestinian National Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met this Friday in Roma. The meeting, which was held at Palazzo Chigi, the headquarters of the Italian Government – where in mid-afternoon the palestinian flag was flying—, lasted about an hour, after which the Italian woman accompanied the Palestinian to Atreyuthe youth party of the president’s party, Brothers of Italy.
And from there Abbas has taken advantage of the opportunity. In particular, the Palestinian has expressed his hope that Italy recognize to Palestine as a State. “We want to build a single state Palestinian”, in which “weapons alone are in the hands of the institutions legitimate interests,” he said. For this reason, “we want to encourage an electoral process“, which can give Palestine “a stable and lasting peace”, which will also help maintain “in security to the regionto the Mediterranean and to Italy,” he added.

The meeting takes place at a time when the two leaders are showing particular interest in maintaining a proximity relationship. For his part, Meloni clearly seeks gain prominence in the Palestinian conflict. So much so that the Italian has explicitly requested that her country have a place at the table. negotiations for reconstruction in Gazaa request that could be plausible given his closeness to the American president, Donald Trump.
Instead, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) has repeatedly made clear that it wants Italia recognize to Palestine as a State. “I have renewed my request,” Abás himself explained after his previous meeting with the Italian, in November. This, in fact, is the second meeting between Meloni and Abbas in a few weeks. The previous meeting was held in November, when, in addition to meeting the Italian prime minister, Abbas met with the Italian president, Sergio Mattarella, and with Pope Leo XIV.
