The Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, IP, welcomed the national decision in favor of the application for registration of “Dom Rodrigo do Algarve” as a Protected Geographical Indication (IGP), given by the Secretary of State for Agriculture, João Moura, on November 17, 2025 and published through Notice (extract) no. 29949/2025/2, in the Official Gazette of 9 December 2025.

In a statement, CCDR Algarve highlights that the decision “officially recognizes the uniqueness of this emblematic sweet”, whose candidacy was presented by ADRA – Associação dos Doces Regionales do Algarve, valuing “its traditional character, the strong connection to the territory and the know-how transmitted over generations”.

The regional entity recalls that Dom Rodrigo do Algarve – prepared from egg strands, soft eggs with almonds, sugar and cinnamon – constitutes “one of the most representative symbols of Algarve convent sweets”, being historically associated with the cities of Lagos and Tavira and integrating the cultural and gastronomic heritage of the region.

CCDR Algarve also highlights that, although production is now spread throughout the Algarve, the sweet preserves “consolidated artisanal methods”, including the preparation of soft-egg dough with almonds, the making of egg threads and the traditional “burning” stage, resulting in the characteristic sweet “in the shape of a ball, wrapped in parchment paper and colored metallized paper”, as described in the respective Specifications.

According to , the attribution of the PGI “represents a relevant milestone for the economic, cultural and tourist development of the Algarve”, simultaneously ensuring the protection of the product against imitations and guaranteeing “high standards of origin, quality and authenticity”.

The recognition also certifies to consumers that each unit is produced “in the defined geographical area – the 67 parishes of the 16 municipalities of the Algarve – and subject to a rigorous system of control and certification by a competent entity”.
