The Planalto Palace officially confirmed a phone call between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and the President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, which took place on December 2nd.
According to the Presidency of the Republic, the conversation was short and dealt with the situation in South America and the Caribbean and pacification in the region.
This was the first conversation between the two presidents since before the presidential election in Venezuela last year. The Brazilian government contested the result of the election — seen by international observers as fraudulent — and did not recognize Maduro’s re-election.

The call comes at a time when United States President Donald Trump is laying siege to Venezuela and wants Maduro to leave, with growing threats to the country.
In conversation with Trump, Lula has already proposed being a mediator in negotiations between the two countries, but has received no response from the US government.
