Tribute to victims at the scene of the shooting
The number of deaths resulting from an armed attack this Sunday during a Jewish festival on Bondi beach, in Sydney, Australia, rose to 16. More than 42 people remain hospitalized.
15 people died and more than 40 were injured in an armed attack carried out by a father and son.
“The 50-year-old man is dead [perfazendo as 16 vítimas mortais]. The 24-year-old man is now in hospital,” New South Wales Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon announced at a press conference.
Armed with semi-automatic weapons, the two attackers opened fire on hundreds of people gathered on Sunday at Bondi beachin Sydney, to celebrate Hannukah.

There is a 12-year-old child among the fatal victims. Three other children remain hospitalized, receiving treatment for gunshot wounds, said the official.

“This is absolutely horrible for the community in general, but particularly for the Jewish community. we watch last night was the worst of humanity, but, at the same time, the best of humanity,” Park said.
The local ruler referred to the fact that a man snatched a gun from one of the shooters’ hands and then pointed it at him as he retreated – which was recorded in images that went viral on social media.
The man hid behind some cars and discreetly approached the shooter. He then threw himself at him and managed to take the gun from him.

The Australians saluted this man on Sunday and Albanese classified him as “a hero”.

“He is an extremely courageous person who faced one of the shooters and saved many lives. This very brave person is now hospitalizedwith serious injuries”, commented the North American President, Donald Trumpfrom the White House.
“In the midst of all this horror, in the midst of all this sadness, there are still wonderful and brave Australians, ready to risk their lives to help perfect strangers”, reacted the Prime Minister of the Australian state of New South Wales, Chris Remembers.
Local television station 7News identified the man as Ahmed al-Ahmed43 years old, fruit sellerand reported that he was shot twice during the shooting.
Police already knew one of the attackers
One of the shooters was shot dead by police, while the second was detained and is in critical condition, according to authorities.
The police indicated that one of the attackers was known to the security services, but there was not “enough threat”.
It is now analyzing a series of suspicious objects, including improvised explosive devices, found in the vehicle of one of the attackers.
Authorities said there may be a third person involved in the attack.
The massacre on one of Australia’s most popular beaches occurred after a wave of anti-Semitic attacks that have rocked the country over the past year, although authorities have not suggested that these attacks and Sunday’s shooting were related.
It was the deadliest armed attack in almost three decades in a country with strict firearms control laws.
