Act against the Dosimetry PL brings together around 14 thousand in Paulista, says USP

Around 13,700 people participated in the demonstration against the Dosimetry PL (bill)held this Sunday (14), on Avenida Paulista, in São Paulo.

The number was calculated by the Political Debate Monitor, a group that has the support of researchers from the University of São Paulo (USP), in partnership with the NGO More in Common.

With a margin of error of 12%, the estimate indicates that the public, at the peak moment, varied between 12,100 and 15,400 protesters. The count was made based on the analysis of aerial images using artificial intelligence software, a methodology already applied in other public events in the country.

According to monitoring, 42 images recorded at seven different times were analyzed. For the final calculation, six photos taken at 4:13 pm were selected, the time considered to be the highest concentration of people. The images covered the entire length of the act, without overlapping.

The so-called Dosimetry PL, which was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in the early hours of last Wednesday (10), reduces the penalties for those involved in the coup plotincluding former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and in the anti-democratic acts of January 8th. With approval in the Chamber, the text went to the Senate for analysis.

The Military Police of the State of São Paulo informed the CNN Brazil which did not carry out an audience count for this demonstration, held on Avenida Paulista, nor for the most recent events that took place there.

No Rio de Janeirothe concentration took place at Posto 5 in Copacabana. The demonstration gained support after a call from singer Caetano Veloso.

Em Belo Horizonteprotesters began to gather at around 9 am at Praça Raul Soares. From there, they walked to Praça da Estação, according to information from representatives of movements participating in the event.

Already in Bethlehemthe gathering also started around 9am and participants walked along Avenida Presidente Vargas towards Praça da República.

Em Brasiliaparticipants gathered at the Museum of the Republic to march towards the National Congress.

On social media, users report that protests also took place in other capitals, such as Campo Grande, João Pessoa e Natal.

The focus of the Dosimetry Bill is to reduce the calculation of sentences and, to this end, the text lists conditions and sets minimum percentages for serving the sentence and progressing the regime. To avoid “legal uncertainty”, the rapporteur, deputy Paulinho da Força (Solidariedade-SP), also stated in the proposal that the remission of the sentence could be compatible with house arrest.
