Motta says that the relationship with the government has had ups and downs and hopes to overcome differences

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), said that he hopes, in 2026, to maintain dialogue and overcome differences that occurred with the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva this year. In the parliamentarian’s assessment, the relationship with the Palácio do Planalto ends the year “stabilized” and will fight for harmony between the Three Powers.

“This issue of the relationship with the government, like all relationships in our lives, you have ups and downs. And this is very natural, because each Power has its independence, each Power has its own way of acting, has its internal dynamics”, he stated.

“The relationship, in my opinion, ends the year stabilized, ends the year with the prospect that we will enter 2026 talking more, dialoguing more and overcoming the differences that occurred throughout the year.”

The vote on the anti-faction bill in the Chamber is a recent example of Motta’s relationship with the government. The deputy even broke relations with the PT leader in the Legislative House, Lindbergh Farias (RJ).

Just last week, Motta had new friction with the government when he announced the vote on the “Dosimetry PL”. Bench leaders told the Estadão/BroadcastGrupo Estado’s real-time news system, who did not know in advance of Motta’s decision to guide the project that Tuesday.

“It is not written in the Constitution that one Power has to agree with the other on 100% of the points,” said Motta. “I have a relationship of deep respect, dialogue with President Lula. We have talked a lot, as I said here, there are disagreements, but this respect was not lost even when this divergence existed”, he stated.

Motta also commented on the relationship with the other Branch of the Republic, the Judiciary, and with the Senate. Regarding the other Legislative House, Motta said that during his four terms, he never saw such a good relationship between the Chamber and the Senate.

“I want to record that I don’t remember these four terms that I’ve been here, as a federal deputy, the time when the Chamber and the Senate had such a good relationship between their presidents. We’ve talked a lot, Davi (Alcolumbre, president of the Senate) with the reality of the Senate, but always talking”, he stated.

There were rifts between the two Houses during these two years, however. In September, the Chamber approved the proposed amendment to the Blindagem Constitution (PEC), which made it difficult to hold parliamentarians criminally responsible. The text ended up archived in the Senate, to protests from deputies, who alleged a breach of agreement.

Motta said that it is necessary to fight for harmony between the Powers. Regarding the STF, Motta assesses that the Court acted “responsibly” and maintained constant dialogue throughout the year.

He commented on the Federal Police operation against parliamentarians Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ) and Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ) launched this Friday, 19th. He stated that the STF exercised “its role of investigating” and that it will monitor to avoid “exaggerations” by the Judiciary.

Motta defends amendments and advises on investigation by the Federal Police

It was also the target of an operation by PF Mariângela Fialek, known as Tuca. The PF searched and seized the office where she worked in the Chamber last Friday, the 12th. Investigations indicate that she acts as a kind of “manager” of the secret budget.

Motta again defended the Chamber employee. “It only compiles data, we have essentially complied with the law that we agreed with the Federal Supreme Court and the Executive Branch regarding the execution of commission rules”, he stated. “All the leaders know that it does the technical work there of compiling data, indications and monitoring the commissions in compliance with this law.”

He also defended parliamentary amendments. For him, only a small portion of parliamentarians misuse the resource. “I am also completely sure that the vast majority of representatives in the Chamber of Deputies work correctly,” he said. ‘The amendments have an important social role, they bring development to the most needy regions of the country.”
