Beijing classifies capture of Venezuelan oil tanker as a violation of international law and sees threat to global peace
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized recent actions involving and. According to the Chinese government, regarding the North American country, the seizure of an oil tanker linked to the US was “arbitrary” and constitutes “a serious violation of international law”.
The spokesperson reiterated that China “always opposes illegal unilateral sanctions, without basis in international law and without authorization from the Security Council”, adding that Venezuela has the right to develop external cooperation and defend its rights and legitimate interests.
When dealing with statements made by a senior Japanese official about the possibility of the country possessing nuclear weapons, the spokesperson stated that China rejects the statements. According to him, comments of this type represent “an open provocation of the post-war international order and the nuclear non-proliferation regime”, as well as a “serious threat to regional and international peace and stability”.
The Chinese government maintains that such statements cannot be treated as individual attitudes and argues that the international community maintains high vigilance and firm opposition to this type of position on the part of Japan.
Chinese criticism comes amid regional reactions to Japan’s discussions on security and defense. This Sunday (21) released a statement via its news agency, KCNA, in which it accuses Japan of seeking nuclearization and states that such a move “would unleash a great catastrophe on humanity”, arguing that these attempts should be “totally blocked”.
