Former president Jair Bolsonaro will be hospitalized this Wednesday morning, in Brasília, for exams and pre-operative preparation before surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia. The hospitalization was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court, after Federal Police expertise highlighted the need for medical intervention.
According to general surgeon Cláudio Birolini, responsible for monitoring the former president, Bolsonaro should be admitted to the DF Star hospital in the morning. After admission, the medical team informed that they will publish daily bulletins with information about the procedures carried out and the evolution of the clinical condition.
The schedule foresees that this Wednesday will be dedicated to clinical and imaging exams, in addition to pre-operative preparation. The surgery is scheduled for Thursday morning, Christmas Day, and should last between three and four hours.

— On Wednesday, we will have exams and pre-operative preparation and on early Thursday, surgery. We have not yet defined when we will perform the anesthetic procedure on the phrenic nerve — said the surgeon.
Understand the exams and preoperative preparation
Before surgery, Bolsonaro will undergo a battery of clinical and laboratory tests to confirm the diagnosis, assess general health conditions and reduce risks during the procedure. This stage includes cardiological and anesthetic evaluations, as well as medication adjustments and the clinical preparation necessary for the intervention.
What is bilateral inguinal hernia surgery?
Bilateral inguinal hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through weakened points in the abdominal wall in the groin area. The surgery aims to reposition the abdominal contents and reinforce the local muscles, reducing the risk of pain, complications and new protrusions. The procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, with continuous monitoring of vital functions.
Understand phrenic nerve block
The medical team is evaluating when to perform an anesthetic block of the phrenic nerve, a procedure that may be indicated to reduce the persistent hiccups experienced by Bolsonaro in recent months.
The phrenic nerve is responsible for stimulating the diaphragm, a muscle essential for breathing. The blockade seeks to interrupt abnormal neurological stimuli that cause involuntary contractions. The most appropriate time for this intervention has not yet been defined.

Understand what the post-operative period will be like
After surgery, Bolsonaro will undergo strict pain control, using adequate analgesia and continuous monitoring. Recovery includes physiotherapy sessions aimed at early mobilization and improving respiratory function, in addition to preventive measures against thrombotic events, such as deep vein thrombosis.
The medical team’s prediction is that the former president will remain hospitalized for between five and seven days, a period considered necessary for analgesia, physiotherapy, prevention of complications and clinical observation, taking into account the particularities of the case and the history of abdominal surgeries.
Bolsonaro’s defense asked the STF that he be hospitalized on the 24th for preparatory exams, with surgery the following day. The request was analyzed by Moraes, who authorized hospitalization after a technical statement. The minister highlighted that Bolsonaro maintains “full health treatment conditions” at the Federal Police Superintendence in the Federal District, a unit considered close to the hospital where he will be treated.

Despite recognizing the medical indication, Moraes considered that the surgery was elective and not emergency. A Federal Police expert pointed out that the intervention should take place “as soon as possible”, but without characterizing immediate urgency.
Bolsonaro is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison after being convicted by the STF for an attempted coup d’état. In the decision, Moraes highlighted that authorization for hospitalization does not interfere with the execution of the sentence.
The former president will be accompanied during his hospitalization by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. The defense had requested the entry of two of his sons, senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and councilor Carlos Bolsonaro (PL-RJ), but Moraes stated that they will only be released following a court decision.
