The surgery that former president Jair Bolsonaro will undergo on Thursday, 25th, at Christmas, is “standardized, with a lower risk of complications”, he told the Broadcast (Grupo Estado’s real-time news system) general surgeon Claudio Birolini, who accompanies the former president.
According to Birolini, the procedure, an inguinal herniorrhaphy, should last three to four hours.
The doctor considered that “all surgery is complex”, but said that this one should be much simpler compared to the operation carried out in April, which took around 12 hours. “It is much simpler because it is a standardized procedure and carried out electively. The other was an unregulated surgery, in an emergency situation in what we call a ‘hostile abdomen'”, he said.

On Tuesday, the 23rd, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), authorized Bolsonaro’s hospitalization at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasília, to carry out the procedure.
The former president is expected to leave the Federal Police this Wednesday morning. The procedure must be done the next morning.
According to people close to the former president, pre-operative preparation should take place this Wednesday.
There is still no definition regarding the time of anesthetic blockade of the phrenic nerve.
What is bilateral inguinal hernia and what surgery is like
A hernia occurs when there is a looseness or opening in the abdominal/pelvic wall that allows loops of intestine or other tissues to leak through this opening. The condition leads to the formation of a lump and can cause pain and discomfort, especially during physical exertion.
When this extravasation occurs in the groin region, the hernia is called inguinal. It is considered bilateral when it affects the right and left groin simultaneously.

Surgery, as previously mentioned in the Estadão Doctor Paulo Barros, digestive system surgeon at the Specialized Center for Digestive System at Hospital Alemão Oswaldo Cruz, involves pushing the contents of the belly inside and placing a polypropylene mesh (a type of plastic) in the affected area. This mesh contains the abdominal wall, closing this “hole”.
Paulo Barros explained to the Estadão that the surgery can be performed both in the traditional way, with a cut in the groin, and laparoscopically, in which the incisions are very small (5 to 8 millimeters) and the procedure is carried out with the help of a camera inserted inside the patient through these incisions. Laparoscopic surgery can be done with or without robotic technology.
