Detectives from the National Drug Control Center (NPC) did not find any drugs, anabolic steroids or large sums of money during a search of the villa of MMA wrestler Karel Vémola in the village of Měcheniciach near Prague. News website Novinky.cz informed about this on Wednesday, Vémol’s lawyer Vlastimil Rampula, writes TASR.
“The client and I do not understand the accusation at all. It is some kind of confusion, a five-year-old case that has nothing to do with the client and was resolved a long time ago,” Rampula commented on the accusations against Vémol.
According to the source of the Novinky.cz website, the lawyer is apparently referring to an older case related to cocaine. Among other things, it may also allegedly refer to problems with the law that the wrestler had in the past abroad. The British authorities have already convicted him once for drug offences, as a result of which he spent several months behind bars.
“We really don’t know what the search was for on Tuesday as nothing was found, no drugs or anything related to any drug activity. No anabolic steroids, no money, nothing like that,” the lawyer added.
According to Rampula, he does not understand why the police had to detain Vémola just one day before Christmas and at the time when the wrestler was supposed to undergo surgery for inflammation of the jaw.
The lawyer does not yet know whether the police and the prosecutor’s office will propose custody for Vémola, but he says he is ready for anything. He wants to file a complaint against the charges.
“This case is not about Karlos at all. It was very rash and ill-considered. The only thing it caused is huge media interest and a lot of speculation. It could destroy the client professionally and personally,” believes Rampula.
The NPC, together with customs officers, conducted a house search of Vémol’s villa on Tuesday morning and took the wrestler away in handcuffs for questioning. The Czech authorities also raided Vémol’s father in Prague.
The spokeswoman for the anti-drug directorate, Lucia Šmoldasová, confirmed on Tuesday that three men were detained who face charges of “serious organized drug activity on an international scale”. She added that it is a criminal offense of illegal production and other handling of narcotic and psychotropic substances and poisons, which, in case of conviction, is punishable by imprisonment for ten to eighteen years.
However, according to the source of the Novinky.cz website, this number of accused is not final.
