Grandfather of children missing in shipwreck in Indonesia tells how his daughter and one of his granddaughters were saved

Indonesian authorities continue searches for Fernando Martín and his three missing children, two boys and a girl aged 12, 10 and 9. Grandfather, Enrique Ortuño is in contact with his daughter, but fears the worst for his son-in-law and other grandchildren.

Speaking to the Spanish newspaper , Ortuño says that the hope of seeing Martín and three grandchildren alive again is diminishing by the minute. “All we can do is hope for a miracle,” he declared.

In constant contact with his daughter since she was saved, the owner of the renowned restaurant El Coso del Mar, located on Las Arenas beach, in Valencia, claims that his daughter and granddaughter survived because “they were thrown into the sea” and “were on higher ground”.

“They fell into the water and were rescued, but my three grandchildren and my son-in-law were possibly trapped inside the boat, which broke apart and sank quickly”, he explained.

The family involved in the disaster is made up of eight people: the couple and six children, two of the children did not travel with the family to Indonesia because they were too young, according to the grandfather.

According to the Spanish newspaper, the boat sank due to adverse conditions. The accident was caused by strong swells, with waves exceeding three meters.

The couple was traveling with their children to the Indonesian archipelago, enjoying their Christmas holidays.

Who is Fernando Martín?

The Spanish coach played as a central defender for several teams, including Alcoyano. His coaching career began at Valencia CF around a decade ago.

In an interview with the club at the beginning of this season, Martín was enthusiastic about the objective of “helping the girls reach the first team prepared and with the values ​​of Valencianism”.

Valencia CF sent a message of support to the family via social media “at such a difficult time for everyone”. In a publication, which has since been deleted, the coach’s death was mentioned, however, there is still no official confirmation in this regard.
