Geophysical Institute of Peru reported that it has recorded, since Thursday (25), several earthquakes in the country
A magnitude 6 earthquake hit the port city of Chimbote on Saturday (27), about 450 kilometers north of Lima, capital of Peru. According to local authorities, 25 people were injured and structures of schools, homes and the city’s main hospital were damaged. In videos circulating on social media, it is possible to see supermarkets with goods on the floor.
The tremor occurred at 9:51 pm on Saturday (11:51 pm Brasília time) at a depth of 52 kilometers. The epicenter of the tremor was recorded in the Pacific Ocean, according to the official bulletin.
The Geophysical Institute of Peru reported that, since Thursday (25), it has recorded several earthquakes in the country, including one of magnitude 4.8, this Sunday (28), 155 kilometers south of Lima.
The Institute of Geology, Mining and Metallurgy reported that it “identified critical zones [em razão de] geological hazards” in the regions of Áncash and La Libertad, north of the Peruvian capital.
With 34 million inhabitants, Peru is located on the so-called Pacific Belt of Fire, which stretches along the west coast of the Americas and east Asia. These regions experience the greatest seismic activity in the world. In the South American country alone, at least a hundred tremors that are noticeable to the population occur annually.
In 1970, Peru suffered one of the deadliest earthquakes in the last 100 years, in which 67,000 people died in Áncash.
