Alcolumbre calls Wagner and gets back in touch after a month – 12/29/2025 – Panel

After more than a month without contact, the president of , (-AP), broke the ice and called the government leader in the Senate, (-BA), on December 24th to wish him a merry Christmas.

Alcolumbre and Wagner since November 20, when Lula (PT) announced that he had chosen, minister of the AGU (Attorney General of the Union), for the STF (Supreme Federal Court) — and not, an ally of the president of the Senate.

The call was quick and limited to Christmas congratulations. Thorny issues, such as the date of the AGU minister’s hearing in the Senate, which has not yet been set, were left aside.

In addition to being frustrated with the choice of Messias over Pacheco, Alcolumbre complained about not having been notified in advance of the announcement.

In recent weeks, people close to the president of the Senate said that the feeling was one of complete indignation. The senator is rumored to have asked for government positions in exchange for approval from the Union’s Attorney General.

On November 30, Alcolumbre even released a harsh note against “sectors of the Executive”, accusing the government of wanting to take away powers from the Senate — since the Palácio do Planalto is still in operation.

Without direct contact, Alcolumbre and the government leader had been communicating through other senators, such as the rapporteur for Messias’ nomination, Weverton Rocha (PDT-MA), and the leader of the MDB, Eduardo Braga (AM).

Alcolumbre and Lula also spoke again after weeks apart. The two spoke on the phone after the start of the parliamentary recess and, a few days later, met in person in Brasília, according to reports.
