As examples, the CNBB cites the relaxation of the Clean Record Law, the approval of and the changes in the General Licensing Law as examples of Congress’s disrespect for original and traditional peoples.
The letter also addresses the “loss of decorum and lack of responsibility on the part of some authorities, especially our National Congress.”
Also mentioned as negative highlights were the exorbitant payment of interest and debt repayments, the weakening of ethics and the increase in corruption in public life, social inequality, the increase in violence, especially femicide and other crimes motivated by intolerance, in addition to the use of drugs and the growth of “illicit economies”.
“Hate speech, manipulation of the truth, violence, ideological radicalism and private interests cannot override the common good”, says the document signed by the archbishops of Porto Alegre (RS), Dom Jaime Spengler, president of the CNBB; from Goiânia (GO), Dom João Justino; from Olinda and Recife (PE), Dom Paulo Jackson – respectively, first and second vice-presidents of the CNBB–; and by the general secretary of the CNBB, the auxiliary bishop of Brasília (DF) Dom Ricardo Hoepers.
The institution also reaffirms the Catholic Church’s position against any legalization initiative in Brazil and the defense of life from conception.
Among the positive highlights are the removal of some North American tariffs on several Brazilian products, the stability of inflation and the realization of the .
The CNBB ends the letter by defending democracy as a “heritage of the Brazilian people” that needs care and promotion and wishes for “unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering peace” for next year.
