The CIA (United States Central Intelligence Agency) carried out a drone attack against a port facility on the coast of Venezuela in early December, they told CNN sources familiar with the matter. This would have been the first US attack against a target in Venezuelan territory.
The attack took place on a remote pier that Donald Trump’s government believed was used by the criminal organization Tren de Aragua to store drugs and transfer them to vessels, with the aim of later sending them abroad, according to sources.
No one was present on the premises at the time of the attack, therefore, there were no victims, according to the sources. US Special Operations Forces provided intelligence support for the operation.
Asked about an interview given last week, when he said that the US destroyed a “large facility where ships arrive” linked to drug trafficking in Venezuela, Trump said, this Monday (29), .
However, Trump avoided answering whether the attack was carried out by the military or CIA agents.
“So we attacked all the boats and now we attack the area,” Trump said on Monday. “That (pier) no longer exists,” he added.
Until the revelation of this CIA action, the only ones claiming that they were linked to drug trafficking.
One of the sources heard by CNN classified the attack as successful for destroying the pier and the boats that were there, but also described the action as being, in large part, merely symbolic, as the installation is just one of many used by drug trafficking targeting the international market.
Wanted by CNNthe CIA declined to officially comment on the attack. THE CNN also contacted the White House, the US Special Operations Command and the Venezuelan Ministries of Communications and Foreign Affairs and is awaiting positions.
