The number of drivers in the Federal District who had their right to drive suspended after committing a traffic violation has increased considerably in recent years, according to the DF Traffic Department (Detran-DF).
The data shows that, this year, until the end of November, 9,582 National Driving Licenses (CNH) were suspended, a higher number than that recorded in the entire year 2024 — when there were 8,574.
The reasons why drivers have their right to drive suspended are noteworthy. Of the total, 85% occurred due to flagrant alcohol levels while driving. Last year, this number was even higher: of the 8,574 suspensions, 7,954 were for drunk drivers.

Reckless conduct
To the Metropolises the Penalties Registration and Control Manager, Rodrigo Freitas Xavier, said that the high number of suspensions is mainly due to reckless conduct, disregard for traffic rules and driving vehicles under the influence of alcohol.
“These behaviors significantly increase the risk of claims and result in the application of penalties provided for in current legislation”, he assessed.
However, the trend, according to him, is for change based on the improvement of administrative procedures and the effective application of penalties. “The modernization of processes and strict compliance with suspensions contribute to reducing the feeling of impunity and act as a factor inhibiting new criminal conduct.”
According to Xavier, when the driver realizes that the penalty is applied in a concrete and consistent way, the impact on prevention is immediate.
Education
In parallel with the administrative and inspection actions, the manager of Traffic Educational Action at Detran-DF, Magda Brandão, said that the municipality works directly to raise awareness among drivers, with the aim of preventing infractions that could result in the suspension or revocation of the right to drive.
“The focus is on changing behavior on the roads, using a direct approach and playful education as awareness-raising tools”, he pointed out.
Among the actions developed, according to Magda, are educational blitzes and the Rolê Consciente project. “In the first, drivers receive guidance on risky conduct. Meanwhile, in the last, agents visit bars to warn about the dangers of alcohol levels”, explained the manager.
