Canadian actress Claire Brosseau (48) has decided after many years of struggle with her mental health that she wants to die by assisted suicide. Brosseau was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 14 after turning to alcohol, drugs and sex as a teenager. Doctors later discovered that she also suffered from an eating disorder, anxiety, personality disorder and suicidal tendencies.
Despite trying various medications and therapies, having loving family and friends, and a successful career, nothing helped. For this reason, she attempted suicide several times. “I had a great place to live and I was having fun on set, but when I got back to the hotel I was just crying and screaming and tearing my clothes off. I wanted to kill myself and I couldn’t wait to get out of there“, she said.
He wants to commit assisted suicide
The actress requested euthanasia in 2021 as part of the Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) program, which it allows people with serious and incurable medical conditions to end their lives with the help of a doctor. However, patients who request assisted suicide solely for mental health issues are not yet eligible for the program. Brosseau, who is single and childless, therefore now filed a complaint in the Superior Court of the Province of Ontario, alleging a violation of her rights.
He is one of several people who have connected with the charity organization Dying With Dignity Canada. She argues that the exclusion of people with mental illnesses from MAiD is discriminatory. According to the Canadian government, the temporary exclusion for these applicants will be in effect until at least March 17, 2027.
Despite the actress’ decision, her doctors do not agree on whether euthanasia is the best solution for her. One of her psychiatrists, Dr. Mark Fefergrad, believes he can recover. “I don’t think MAiD is the only option for her,” he noted.
