Eleven dead and 255 arrested for excessive alcohol in PSP and GNR New Year operations

Between Saturday and Wednesday, the two police forces recorded 1,576 road accidents. Inspection operations continue until Sunday.

Eleven people died on Portuguese roads and 255 were arrested for excessive alcohol consumption by the PSP and GNR in five days as part of the operations they are carrying out during the New Year period.

In statements released this Thursday, the two police forces recorded, between Saturday and Wednesday 1,576 road accidentsresulting in 11 deaths, 34 serious injuries and 409 minor injuries in the operation that continues until Sunday.

The PSP recorded three fatalities resulting from accidents that occurred in Vila Nova de Gaia, Benfica (Lisbon) and Massamá (Sintra).

The accidents that caused the eight deaths reported by the GNR occurred on Highway 1, in Alcanena (Santarém), on Estrada Nacional (EN) 9, in Torres Vedras (Lisbon), EN 15 in Lixa (Porto), on EN 111 in Montemor-o-Velho (Coimbra), on EN 230 in Águeda (Aveiro), on EN 255-1 in Sobral da Adiça (Beja), in Praça da Independência, in Castelo de Paiva (Aveiro), and on Estrada Municipal 1.205 in Mafra (Lisbon).

The Republican National Guard indicates that, between Saturday and Wednesday, 41,220 drivers were inspected, of which 244 were driving with excess alcohol and, of these, 165 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l, in addition to 86 people being arrested for driving without a legal license.

The GNR also states that it registered 6,418 road traffic offenses1,128 of which were due to speeding, 169 due to lack of or incorrect use of a seat belt, 161 due to use of a cell phone while driving, 894 due to lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 277 due to lack of mandatory civil liability insurance.

In turn, the Public Security Police carried out, in five days, 302 arrestsof which 166 were for road traffic crimes, namely 90 for drunk driving and 61 for lack of legal license to drive.

The PSP also detained 18 people for theft and robbery and 33 suspects for drug trafficking and seized five firearms, 15 bladed weapons, 22 ammunition and 12,437 pyrotechnic items.

Nas roadsthe police inspected 7,980 drivers and controlled 24,780 vehicles using radar, with 2,121 violations detected, 328 of which were due to speeding and 211 due to lack of mandatory periodic inspection.

PSP and GNR have been running operations focused on the Christmas and New Year periods since December 18th and January 4th.
