In a press conference held this Saturday (3), he detailed how it went. The American president stated that the lights in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas, were turned off “thanks to a certain capability that we have. It was dark. It was lethal.” Trump also stated that the capture took place by “air, land and sea”. He would have approved the mission four days earlier, according to the Routers news agency. The planning, however, would have taken months, with elite American troops training in a replica of Maduro’s hideout.

Trump reportedly followed the so-called Operation Absolute Resolve right from his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida. 11 warships were mobilized overnight, with more than a dozen F-35 fighters in the Caribbean. Dan Caine, general, stated that more than 150 aircraft were used in the total operation. The troops arrived under enemy fire at around 3 am in Brazil.

Also according to him, Maduro and his wife surrendered, despite having previously tried to reach a safe room, according to Trump. Leaving Venezuelan territory, American troops would have faced resistance, but at 3:20 am the helicopters carrying Maduro were already at sea. The Venezuelan president was taken to a ship, where he continued his journey to the Guantánamo base.
