“We express our concern regarding any attempt at government control, administration or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources, which is incompatible with international law and threatens the political, economic and social stability of the region”, says one of the excerpts of the statement
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released this Sunday, 4th, a joint position of the governments of Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay and Spain on the situation in Venezuela. The statement cites concerns about the “external appropriation” of Venezuela’s natural resources and asks the UN to act to de-escalate tensions after the United States attack.
“We express our concern regarding any attempt at government control, administration or external appropriation of natural or strategic resources, which is incompatible with international law and threatens the political, economic and social stability of the region”, says one of the excerpts of the released statement.
The grouping of countries is informal and ad hoc (only on the specific situation of Venezuela).
On another front, a meeting of foreign ministers within the scope of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) is expected today. This intergovernmental mechanism is permanently composed of 33 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.
US offensive
The president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, was captured by the United States in the early hours of last Saturday. He was indicted in the United States on “narcoterrorism” and other charges. Yesterday, at a press conference in Florida, Trump stated that his government must manage Venezuela until a transition is completed.
In the statement released today, the six countries, including Brazil, highlight the character of Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace. They also call for regional unity, regardless of political differences.
This Saturday, the 3rd, President Lula said that the bombings in Venezuelan territory and the capture of its president cross an “unacceptable” line. On the other hand, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, shared news about the North American attack on X (Twitter) and celebrated the feat.
The group of six countries, in today’s declaration, reiterate that the situation in Venezuela must be resolved exclusively by peaceful means, with respect for the will of the Venezuelan people and without external interference. “We reaffirm that only an inclusive political process, led by Venezuelans, can lead to a democratic, sustainable and respectful solution for human dignity”, they state.
In addition to expressing concern about the military actions carried out unilaterally in the territory of Venezuela, the six countries assess that these measures “constitute an extremely dangerous precedent for regional peace and security and the rules-based international order, in addition to putting the civilian population at risk”.
