Guarantee from Luís Montenegro; on a peace mission, then we’ll see. The United Kingdom and France signed a joint declaration.
The Prime Minister, Luis Montenegro, reiterated this Tuesday that the participation of Portuguese military in a future force peacekeeping in Ukraine it will only be decided later and only if necessary.
Speaking to journalists at the end of a meeting of the so-called Coalition of Good Will, in Paris, the head of the Government assured that such a decision will be placed “in the internal decision process”.
“I am not suggesting that we will reach that point, because it may never be necessary, even in the context of a consolidated peace”, he stressed.
This scenario “It’s not out of the realm of possibility”because it is part of Portugal’s international commitments.
Sending forces during the conflict is out of the question. Montenegro left a guarantee: while the war continues, Portugal will not send any military personnel.
“It is out of the question that there will be Portuguese forces on Ukrainian territory while there is war, this is completely out of the question”, assured the prime minister.
At the same Goodwill Coalition meeting, United Kingdom and France signed a declaration of intent to send troops to Ukraine and establish military centers in the country if peace is reached with Russia, said British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the Germany may send peacekeeping troops to a neighboring country of Ukraine, in the event of a ceasefire with Russia – but not for Ukraine.
