EU regrets US abandonment of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate

The UNFCCC, a 1992 agreement between 198 countries to financially support climate change activities in developing countries, is the treaty underlying the historic Paris Climate Agreement

The European Commissioner for Climate Action, the Dutch Wopke Hoekstra, today lamented the abandonment of the United States of America (USA) from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), guaranteeing the European Union’s (EU) commitment to international cooperation.

“The UNFCCC is the foundation for global climate action. It brings countries together to support climate action, reduce emissions, adapt to climate change and monitor developments. The decision by the world’s largest economy and second largest emitter to withdraw is regrettable and unfortunate,” Hoekstra wrote on the digital platform LinkedIn.

US President Donald Trump signed a decree on Wednesday that exempts the US from 66 international organizations and numerous treaties, which he considers contrary to Washington’s interests, including 31 entities of the United Nations, whose secretary general is the former Portuguese Prime Minister António Guterres.

The member of the European community executive stressed that the EU will continue to “unequivocally support international climate research, as the basis of our knowledge and our work”.

The Christian Democrat from the Netherlands added that the EU will maintain “international climate cooperation and, internally”, continue with the “agenda of climate action, competitiveness and independence”.

The UNFCCC, a 1992 agreement between 198 countries to financially support climate change activities in developing countries, is the treaty underlying the historic Paris Climate Agreement.

Trump, who calls climate change a hoax, withdrew from that agreement shortly after regaining the White House.
