‘The 8th of January is marked in history as the day of victory for democracy’, declares Lula

During the ceremony to remember the coup acts, the president recalled the country’s past, which survived a dictatorship, and argued that ‘those who do not know the past are condemned to repeat it’

The coup acts of the day celebrate three years this Thursday (8) after having disturbed the structure of the Three Powers and leaving a trail of destruction in the main public buildings of Brasília. To remember the impact and consequences of the attacks, the government of and the Federal Supreme Court (STF) organize acts and ceremonies throughout the day.

The president participates in a ceremony at Palácio do Planalto to remember the coup acts. There is the expectation that the PT member will use the act to veto the bill that reduces the sentences of those convicted of vandalizing the buildings of the Three Powers, including the former president

“January 8 is marked in history as the day of victory for democracy, victory over those who tried to take power by force, disregarding the popular will expressed at the polls. They are those who always defended dictatorship, torture and the extermination of opponents and intended to subject Brazil to an exceptional regime”, said President Lula.

During his speech, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva also cited the famous phrase by Spanish philosopher George Santayana to remember the past of the country that survived a dictatorship: “Those who do not know the past are condemned to repeat it.”

The president also celebrated the date, which he considered important for many Brazilians to celebrate. “Firstly, for maintaining the democratic rule of law in this country. Secondly, for what we managed to achieve and put into practice”, stated the president.

According to Lula, recent years have demonstrated the strength of democratic institutions. “We have proven, in these three years in office, that democracy is the art of the impossible, of competence and democratic coexistence in adversity”, he highlighted.

President Lula congratulated the performance of the in trials, highlighting the role of the Court in defending democracy and the rule of law. “The behavior of the Supreme Court was masterful and did not submit to anyone’s whims, which allowed us, when exercising democracy, to see things happen in the most predictable way possible.”

Lewandowski

During the ceremony, the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, highlighted that crimes against the democratic rule of law do not allow for flexibility. “It is necessary to emphasize that crimes committed against the democratic rule of law are imprescriptible and cannot be subject to pardon, grace or amnesty, especially when they involve civil or military groups,” he stated.

Alckmin

In the same vein, vice-president Geraldo Alckmin defended the strict application of the law. “Justice is not divided, justice is not divided. Those who broke the constitutional order committed a crime and must suffer the rigor of justice and the weight of history”, he declared, to applause from the audience present.
