Amid the impasse over Banco Master, Lula talks to the president of the TCU

Amid the discussions involving the extrajudicial liquidation of Banco Master and the role of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU) in the case, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke the day before yesterday by telephone with the president of the Court of Auditors, Minister Vital do Rêgo Filho.

According to interlocutors, the call was described as informal, typical at the beginning of the year, and did not have a deliberative character.

According to reports made by the minister himself to interlocutors, the conversation covered a series of subjects, without an exclusive focus on the bank episode.

Lula spoke about the economic scenario and issues related to the market, in addition to commenting that he intends to reduce the number of trips in 2026 due to the electoral calendar, assessing that the year will require greater presence in .

Still according to the report, the topic of Banco Master entered the conversation only in a general way. Vital do Rêgo would have made a point of highlighting that there was no request, suggestion or signal from the President of the Republic regarding expectations regarding the TCU’s actions in the case. The dialogue did not involve demands or guidance, and the president would have demonstrated understanding that the court acts independently.

This Thursday, minister Jhonatan de Jesus, of the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), suspended the in-person inspection at the Central Bank that he himself had determined to investigate the procedures adopted in the liquidation of Master. In a decision signed yesterday, the minister also submitted the case to the plenary.

In his decision, Jhonatan highlighted that the “public dimension assumed by the case, with disproportionate contours for common investigative measures in this Court”, recommends that the issue be submitted to the plenary, an instance that he considers natural to “institutionally stabilize the matter”.

The date on which the Court’s plenary will analyze the case has not yet been set. TCU is on recess until the end of the month.
